- 1). Secure the handle of the tool in a bench vise or secure it to a flat surface with a pair of vise grips. If removing rust from a lawnmower blade, clamp down on the flat portion of the blade and not the curved cutting end.
- 2). Brush the steel blade with a wire brush down the length of the blade to remove the top surface rust.
- 3). Spray penetrating oil onto a piece of fine grit sandpaper. Rub the blade with the sandpaper, applying light pressure. Wipe the blade with a dry cloth.
- 4). Apply penetrating oil to 0000 steel wool. Rub the blade briskly with the wool until all of the rust is gone.
- 1). Apply metal polish to a piece of steel wool. Hold the knife handle in one hand and rub the steel wool over the length of the blade. Apply light pressure when rubbing the steel wool to avoid scratching the metal.
- 2). Wipe the knife blade clean with a dry cloth.
- 3). Add a few drops of metal polish to a wet cloth and rub the blade vigorously, taking care when close to the edge. This removes all of the rust from the knife.
