- 1). Air out your home when smoke fills the air and act quickly. For instance, if something in the kitchen accidentally burns, open all the windows and doors to let out the smoke. Turn on any overhead fans to further circulate the air. If your home is two stories, open the upstairs windows as well because smoke can quickly travel. If your smoke alarms are triggered, do not take the batteries out. Use the ceasing of the alarm sound as an indicator that the majority of the smoke has been aired out of your home.
- 2). Clean the air in your home. Even after you have aired out the smoke, the odor may still be in your home. If this is the case, consider taking steps to neutralize the air. Purchase an air purifier and place it in the room where the smoke originated. The air purifier will help clean the odor-causing components in the air.
- 3). Replace the smoke odor with other smells in your home. Burn strong-smelling candles to replace the smoke odor with a more pleasing smell. Use plug-in air fresheners in your wall sockets. Also, strategically place bowls of potpourri throughout your home to create a more pleasing scent.
- 4). Prevent smoke odor from penetrating the air in your home in the future. First, ask smokers to smoke outdoors. Second, keep your kitchen area clean. A common cause for kitchen smoke is leftover food or grease in the oven and on the burners. Cleaning off any caked on food or grease should decrease incidences of smoke in your kitchen. Finally, pay attention to what you are cooking so you do not burn items and create smoke.
