- 1). Remove the globe from the top of the cool kerosene lantern. Loosen the loaded spring and tilt the globe out of its upright position. Pull the globe out and wash it in warm water with a little dish soap. Wipe the glass clean with a dry rag.
- 2). Unscrew the burner, pull the wick out and as you do, scrape it against the side of the fuel tank with your finger to remove as much of the kerosene as possible to keep it from dripping on your work surface. Throw away old wicks, as they are probably gummed up with evaporated kerosene deposits.
- 3). Pour full-strength white vinegar into a bowl, add the burner and let it sit for a few minutes. Use an old toothbrush to remove any deposits. Dry thoroughly with a clean rag.
- 4). Unscrew the cover the to kerosene tank and pour out the old fuel into an appropriate container like a metal coffee can or a glass jar. Turn the tank upside down to drain out any extra kerosene onto some newspaper while you work on the other parts.
- 5). Clean the outside of the lantern with a rag dipped in the white vinegar; scrub in the corners with the old toothbrush. Dry everything with the clean dry rag, polishing it as much as possible. Soak up any residual kerosene in the tank with crumpled newspaper.
- 6). Pour new kerosene into the tank. Dip a new wick into the fuel and feed it into the burner. Replace the cover to the fuel tank and screw the burner back into place. Set the globe back in place and tilt it back into position.
