- Before putting a signature onto the tag of the fire extinguisher, which is where maintenance records are kept, there are many things that must be done to ensure that the extinguisher has been properly maintained. Location, testing and physical examination are three very important aspects to keep in mind for proper fire extinguisher maintenance and record keeping. To simply put down a signature and not worry about it would be unsafe and improper.
Things to look for when inspecting the fire extinguisher are to make sure it is in an accessible place, is not obstructed by furniture or equipment, and that its nozzle is not in a place where an object could damage it. Also along those lines, the pressure of the extinguisher should be the recommended level (or in the green zone when looking at the gauge) and have no significant damage or damage that is visible. Also, most importantly, check that the tamper seal on the top is still intact. After these important steps have been taken, then the signature can be put onto the tag on the fire extinguisher to say it has been maintained. While there is no set frequency with which to perform a check, it should be done AT LEAST once a week for businesses and once a month for your house.
To check a fire extinguisher's maintenance history, look at the tag. There should always be a signature on it. A signature, in this case, includes both a name and a date when the maintenance was performed. If the maintenance hasn't been done in a reasonable time period, someone should be assigned the job and the maintenance should be done immediately in case the fire extinguisher has damage and needs to be replaced. These important steps will lead to a safer environment.
