- 1). Eliminate any source of dampness. This means fixing leaking pipes and extending downspouts away from the house's foundation.
- 2). Run a dehumidifier in the mold-infested room 24/7. Don't forget to empty it when the water bin is full.
- 3). Install fluorescent lights to shine on the mold infestation. Leave them on a few hours each day so the UV light kills the mold. A tanning lamp may be even better, if you wear proper eye gear.
- 4). Scrub away the mold with a solution of boric acid dissolved to saturation in 10 percent hydrogen peroxide. Don't use 3 percent solution. It is too weak a disinfectant for mold.
- 5). Scrub off the mold in layers. Remove the top, moist layer, but not so much as to start scraping dry mold underneath. Remoisten and scrub until the mold is gone. If the mold has penetrated too deeply, you may need to cut out the portion of the wall affected and seal it airtight in plastic bags to remove it. Plaster in replacement drywall or Sheetrock to fill the hole.
- 6). Look for signs of mold inside if you open up the wall. Do a similar scrubdown, or remove the whole wall to access the mold in severe cases.
