How to Repair Grout in Brick

    • 1). Scrape out the old grout from the horizontal joints with a carbide-tipped grout saw. The grout should be removed at a depth of 3/4-inch.

    • 2). Remove the old grout from vertical grout joints with a chisel and a hammer. Press the end of the chisel against the grout, and then tap the chisel with the hammer until the grout is removed.

    • 3). Brush the old grout and debris out of the joints with a stiff-bristled brush. Spray the bricks and joints with water until the bricks are soaking wet and dripping. Wait until the next day to continue the project.

    • 4). Spray down the bricks again with water. Combine the dry mortar mix with water in a large bucket according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 5). Scoop up the mortar with the brick trowel, and then use the trowel to compact the mortar into the horizontal and vertical joints. Once the joints are completely filled with mortar, use the flat side of the trowel to smooth the mortar and scrape excess mortar off of the bricks.

    • 6). Allow the mortar to firm up, and then swipe the stiff-bristled brush diagonally across the mortar to remove any dry mortar crumbs. Wet a sponge with water, and then wipe the mortar residue off the of bricks with the sponge.

    • 7). Keep a tarp over the joints for three days. During the three days, lightly mist the joints with water to keep the bricks and mortar moist. Allow the mortar to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.
