- If you're in charge of decorating for vacation Bible school, you can make the space come alive for the children by using a western theme. You can dovetail the theme with various Bible stories, such as David and Goliath. But coordinating the western decorations with the curriculum isn't mandatory. The children will find the environment inviting and will look forward to attending Bible school every day.
- Decorating the walls will make vacation Bible school much more appealing. You can enlarge photos of cowboys, cows, lassos and western stars and tape them to the walls, or purchase cutouts of these images. It's perfectly fine to add short Bible verses or messages to the walls, between the western images.
- Cowboy boots and hats can be an integral part of your theme, as well. Use a boot as a container for real or synthetic sunflowers. A boot can also be used to store supplies or treats for the children. Consider making a cowboy boot pinata and filling it with treats like peanut brittle and beef jerky or small western stars and mini-Bibles. The children can break the pinata open at the end of bible school. Purchase a few cowboy hats in bright colors and allow the children to wear them when they accomplish something in class like remembering a Bible verse or making a beautiful craft.
- Bails of hay are often an element of traditional western decor, and you can use them in a number of ways. Use small bails as seating, or tie a different color rope around each bail of hay to mark the stations in the vacation bible school area, such as the crafts area or the snack area. Use straw for making crafts, such as straw bracelets and centerpieces.
