- LCD technology got its start when Austrian botanist Frederich Rheinizer discovered liquid crystal in 1888. But it wasn't until the 1960s that researchers were able to demonstrate how charged liquid crystals change the way light passes through them. The technology hit the market in 1971.
- LCD displays work by creating images on a flat surface generated by light coming through liquid crystals and polarized glass. The liquid crystal cells form pixels which make images. By contrast, traditional monitors create images by projecting a beam of electrons through a large, glass tube.
- LCDs have quickly grown in popularity over traditional CRT displays. LCD displays weigh considerably less and are not as bulky.Their lower power consumption makes them a wise energy choice. Most will generate less heat as well. Finally, LCD displays cause less eye strain than their counterparts.
