The interest rates on credit cards make them accumulate a lot of debt.
While it is easy to amass debt with credit cards, eliminating that debt can be quite an uphill task.
If you only manage to make minimum monthly payments on your credit card(s), a small balance may take eons to repay because of the high interest rates.
If you want to get rid of your debt, the first thing to do is make a list of all your credit cards.
This should include the interest rates, any outstanding balance and the least payment.
Also make sure that you have arranged the list from the card with the highest rate to the one with the lowest.
The next step should be to add up all your minimum payments.
This total will guide you on what is the very least amount you need to have to repay your debt.
Since you are trying to pay off more than your minimum, consult your budget and find out where you can come up with some extra money to pay off your debt.
When you put more than the minimum payments you end up repaying your debt faster, hence eliminating your debt faster.
Keep paying off the minimum on each card besides the one at the top of your list.
This card has the highest interest rate and is the most costly as it maintains a balance.
Any extra budgeted income pays off that card.
Keep doing this until the first card is paid off, then continue making minimum repayments on the other cards then add the amount you were paying on the first card plus the minimum amount and apply it to the second card.
Do this till all the cards are paid off.
However, the safest, most reliable way to eliminate credit card debt is to deal with cash.
