- 1). Choose a type of lure to make, such as a top water popping lure or diving crank bait. Select the wood for the lure from balsa, pine or cedar.
- 2). Select a piece of wood that will accommodate the diameter of the lure to be turned as well as its length. Trim the length of the wood with a fine-tooth wood saw so that it is exactly as long as the length desired for the finished lure.
- 3). Locate the exact center of the block of wood with a ruler. Measure vertically and horizontally on the ends of the wooden block to find the center point. Mark the points with a pencil.
- 4). Mount the wood block securely in the wood-turning lathe and put on safety glasses. Use the end marks on the block to center the block in the lathe. Start the lathe and check to make sure the block is securely attached.
- 5). Remove wood from the block with wood-turning chisels. Choose a chisel based on personal preference to begin gradually removing wood from the block to shape it into a lure.
- 6). Sand the wooden lure with 320-grit sandpaper once the bulk of the wood has been removed and the lure is roughly shaped. Cut a strip of sandpaper 1 inch wide and 6 to 8 inches long from a sheet of sandpaper. Hold the sandpaper firmly with both hands against the turning wooden lure to further shape and smooth the lure.
