- 1). Examine a circle hook before tying it to your line to make sure that the hook is sufficiently sharp to properly hook any fish that takes your bait.
- 2). Position dull hooks for sharpening by grasping the shaft of the hook with the thumb and forefinger and positioning the hook so that the hook bend and point are below the hook shaft and are pointing directly at you.
- 3). Grasp your groove file in your free hand and position the outside edge of the hook point in the groove running down the middle of your groove file.
- 4). Slide the point of the hook through the groove in the file, using smooth, controlled strokes. Each stroke sharpens both sides of the hook point that is situated in the file's groove.
- 5). Carefully check the point of the hook with your finger. If the hook is not sufficiently sharp, repeat Steps 2-4 until the hook attains the necessary degree of sharpness..
