A Wisconsin Commercial Drivers License (CDL) is required to drive vehicles that weigh more than 26,000 pounds, carry hazardous materials or carry more than 16 people. The state requires applicants to pass a test demonstrating the knowledge and skill needed to operate these large vehicles on intra-state and interstate roadways before the CDL is granted. - To qualify for a CDL you must have a valid Wisconsin Class D driver's license for automobiles.
- Pass knowledge tests. All candidates for a CDL must pass Wisconsin's general knowledge test for commercial vehicles and then pass an additional written exam on the particular vehicle or vehicles the candidate will be operating. You must score at least 80 percent to pass the tests. For a Class H hazardous cargo license, you must present a valid Social Security card as proof of your U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status. The tests are free of charge.
- Obtain your instruction permit. Submit Form MV3001, application form, for your permit. You will also need proof of U.S. citizenship or legal status, fingerprinting, a federal medical card (required by federal law for a CDL) and the required fees. To haul hazardous materials (Class H) you will also need a background check. The permit is good for six months.
- Schedule and pass the skill tests. Candidates must pass an inspection test and a driving skills test with an approved third party tester on board.
