- 1). Cover all surfaces adjacent to the border wallpaper with masking tape to prevent the steam from soaking into them.
- 2). Cut a series of horizontal lines into the border paper with a utility knife. Place a horizontal line every foot, starting from the bottom and moving to the top of the paper, creating a series of footwide panels. Take care not to cut into the surface beneath.
- 3). Connect a flexible extension hose to your steamer, and place an upholstery nozzle on the hose end.
- 4). Fill the reservoir in the steamer with water to the line marking the maximum fill capacity.
- 5). Turn on the steamer, and wait for it to build up heat. The steamer is ready for use when the nozzle on the end exudes steam, about 10 to 15 minutes for most steamer models.
- 6). Place the nozzle of the steamer against the wallpaper, and trigger the steam release. Move the nozzle in a back and forth motion across the wallpaper border, working your way downward from the top of the border. Apply enough steam to dampen the wallpaper, turning it slightly darker from the moisture. The heat from the steam softens the adhesive while the moisture weakens the paper.
- 7). Place the paper stripper under the topmost panel once it's soaked through, and peel the panel away from the wall. Work downward from the top, soaking and peeling the border away a panel at a time.
- 8). Wipe down the wall with a damp cloth to remove any adhesive residue. Wipe the wall a second time with a dry cloth to dry the surface.
- 9). Remove the masking tape.
