- For a homeowner to decide which wall color will match her fireplace, she must first determine what she means by "matching.".For example, a brick red colored wall will match a brick fireplace in hue, but will blend in with the fireplace. A better question might be to ask what colors go with the fireplace.
- The would-be decorator has a number of choices in terms of wall color. Contrasting colors like a mustard yellow wall next to a brick red fireplace will provide contrast, which will make the fireplace stand out. Homeowners should ask themselves if they want a wall color that's complementary, contrasting or analogous in color to the fireplace. (See Resources for a guide that explains the difference)
- Old fireplaces can be given a facelift with paint, and it's perfectly acceptable to paint the fireplace along with the wall beside it. For this to work visually, the two colors should be different enough to draw the eye to the fireplace.
