- 1). Measure the available space for the bar. Include the length, width and height, so you can sketch various shapes. Draw a bar with shelving underneath, for example, and a large wall mirror behind it. Design a bar with a round top and stools all the way around, as another example. Plan to use 2-by-4 lumber boards to construct the basic framework of the bar cabinetry.
- 2). Sketch a bar with storage space to accommodate drinks and glasses. Include a bar sink and refrigerator in the plans. Plan to route water lines from an overhead bathroom on a second floor, for example. Alternatively, look for ways to run water lines from an adjoining kitchen or basement area. Locate nearby electrical outlets to see how you can route wiring to the bar for a refrigerator and overhead lighting.
- 3). Create a bi-level bar, if needed, to make room for mixing drinks and serving snacks at one height, and an eating bar at a different height. Draw the bar to accommodate stools you can purchase ready-made. Measure stools that fit the room's décor and sketch the bar height to work with the stools. Consider adding a metal or wooden foot rail along the bottom of the bar.
- 4). Make a list of building materials and costs. Use high-quality countertop material or granite tiles, if the budget will allow. Design the bar's cabinetry around a framework of lumber boards covered by wooden panels, or plywood covered in laminate materials to complement the countertop. Include a bar faucet and sink that look appropriate with the countertop. Avoid using stainless steel, since this will make the bar look more appropriate for a commercial setting. Instead, use a dull steel finish for a home bar.
- 5). Use graph paper to define the final measurements of the bar area. Design the bar to include special light fixtures and metal or wooden scrollwork on the bar itself or the wall areas near it. Consider wooden posts or stair railing balusters to make the bar area fancy, if this fits the room's décor. Use balusters to attach the bar counter to the ceiling on one end or to create a room divider on one side of the bar.
