Whether your rooms are filled with a single seating choice or many chairs for your visitors, the same old seating arrangements day after day can get boring. If you switch up your home decor from season to season, you might not realize how simple it is to decorate your chairs. With a little inspiration, your chairs can go from simply a place to sit to a great focal point of the room. - Tie-dyeing gained popularity with hippie culture in the 1960s and can be recognized by its bright swirls of rainbow colors. Tie-dyeing's lesser known cousin is dip dyeing, and while the two processes are similar, dip dyeing offers a better solution for chair covers because of the way the products are dyed. To dip dye, you only dye part of the material, creating a stripe. For a chair cover, for example, hold the cover over a pot filled with dissolved dye, and dip the cover in half-way (or one third, as preferred). Once it drips and dries, you've got a custom design. Dyes to match your rug or home decor are available at craft stores. For a more artistic look, dip dye one-third of one side of the chair cover and let dry. Mix a new batch of dye in another color and dip dye one-third of the opposite side. This method gives you a total of three stripes on the chair cover.
- The needlework hobby of latch or rug hooking is commonly associated with creating large wall decorations, floor runners or small pillows, but latch hooking is also ideal for creating chair covers. Most latch hook products are sold in kits consiting of a canvas, cut yarn and a legend telling you where to hook each color. Kits come in an array of designs, including animals, country samplers, cartoon characters and sports logos. One of the most common kit sizes, 12 inches by 12 inches, is often used to create a pillow, but with a few tweaks, your creation can serve as a custom chair pad. If you've got a running theme in your home, such as dolphins or chili peppers, search for kits featuring those prints. Create chair covers for larger chairs such as loungers and recliners out of bigger kits.
- Any home goods shop, bedding store or mass merchandiser will yield a rainbow of blankets you can use to cover a chair, but they can look generic. Instead, get a custom blanket created from a favorite picture of your cat, grandchild or vacation photo through a photo throw vendor. Throws are available in fleece, cotton and many other styles. Photo throw vendors turn your photo into a personalized decoration for your chair that gets a quick smile as you pass through the room.
