- Drugs.com states that almost every antidepressant causes some type of sleep disorder. Endep affects rapid eye movement sleep, which causing a disruption in the overall amount of REM sleep. More common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue and delirium. Other nervous system side effects are increased difficulty with voluntary movements, impairment of thinking (mainly in the elderly) and in rare cases, seizure. Sleep abnormalities will usually subside when use of this drug is stopped.
- Endep has been associated with multiple cardiovascular side effects that can be serious. Orthostatic hypotension, which is when blood pressure is very low after each heartbeat, has occurred in some patients. Other cardiovascular side effects include increased heart rate, and in rare cases, weakening of the heart muscle. Hematologic side effects are also rare but include agranulocytosis (when bone marrow cannot make enough white blood cells) and having too many white blood cells in the blood (eosinophilia).
- Studies have shown that those using antidepressants such as Endep are 2.5 times more likely to have upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Other common gastrointestinal side effects that are less serious are dry mouth (78%) and constipation (55%). Nausea, diarrhea and vomiting have also been experienced by those taking Endep. Genitourinary side effects include trouble urinating and sexual dysfunctions (erectile trouble) in men.
- Endep can cause psychiatric side effects that may become dangerous. These include hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, serious aggressiveness and mental and mood changes. This drug also can cause rash and in rare cases, lesions on the skin. Though very rare, scarring of the liver, caused by lupoid, is possible. Contact your doctor if any of these symptoms persist.
- Further side effects of Endep include liver dysfunctions, such as hepatitis and possible liver failure. Increase in appetite, weight gain, sweating, restlessness, withdrawal symptoms and blurred vision are other possible side effects. Many of these side effects occur after discontinuation of Endep. Alcohol can enhance certain side effects. Tell your doctor if you have a history of certain diseases and disorders such as heart disease and mental illnesses before taking Endep.
