18th Birthday Party Planning Checklist

    Select and Send Invitations

    • Be sure to get the invitations out to all guests as far in advance as possible. The 18th birthday is a very important one, and the birthday boy will want all his good friends and loved ones in attendance. Choose invitations that are fun and playful, but not too childish. Bright colors are OK if you know the birthday girl likes them, but it's best to stick to one color and simple font for the invites. Invitations that feature the guest of honor's favorite sports team, or even the logo from a favorite clothing line can be celebratory yet sophisticated. Since many of the guests are familiar with email, send electronic invitations and request an RSVP via email. You can also set up a website for the bash. This will help you keep track of who will be attending the party, as well as those who won't be able to make the celebration.

    Make Arrangements for Party Food

    • The 18th birthday is very special, and marks your 18-year-old's transition into adulthood. Part of ensuring that the party is enjoyable is making the proper arrangements for the food that will be served. If you plan on having the party catered, contact the restaurant or catering company a few weeks before the party to solidify the date and go over the menu choices. If you will be making the food yourself, or with help from family and friends, choose a menu that you know the birthday guest of honor will enjoy. Gather all the supplies needed to prepare the meal and set the table at least a week before the party. For instance, if your soon-to-be-adult likes "simple" foods like pizza, make the meal more exciting by setting up a pizza bar where guests can create their own mini pies, or you can place them on the grill or in an outdoor oven. If its a more sophisticated party (and the event is not a surprise), work with the guest of honor on the menu so it features quality dinner food, like steak, savory chicken dishes, etc., that will impress the guests while appealing to everyone's tastes.

    Plan for Party Entertainment

    • Talk to your teen about the entertainment so you can use these suggestions to put together a memorable 18th birthday party. Find out the ages of your teen's guests, in case you want to have the party at a club and need to ensure that everyone is legal (18 and older) or that the 17 and under crowd will be allowed. Call the club where you want to hold the party at least a month before the celebration to ensure that the date is acceptable.

If the party will be at home or another location, and you want to provide live music, book the local musicians you want for your teen's party at least a month in advance, and rent some karaoke equipment a week or two before the party if your daughter and her friends love to sing and perform for each other. If you are arranging for your teen to enjoy another surprise after the party, such as going to a movie or local sports game, purchase these tickets two weeks before the party, so that this task will be off your checklist. The earlier you purchase the tickets, the more likely you are to get better seats for your teen and his friends.
