- 1). Clean the seams around the perimeter of the vent with a damp rag. Loose dirt or residue should be removed from the targeted surface to ensure that the caulk will adhere properly.
- 2). Decide on a type of caulk suitable for the application. If the vent is indoors, a silicon sealant will be adequate; vents exposed to the outdoors should be sealed with a more durable and flexible sealant, such as butyl rubber caulk.
- 3). Remove the tip on a tube of caulk using a sharp pair of scissors. Puncture the seal inside the nozzle with a stiff wire, then load the tube into a caulking gun with the tip facing away from the trigger.
- 4). Apply a bead of caulk over the seem between the vent cover and the surface on which it is mounted. Drag the tip of the caulking gun along each side of the vent until an even seal has been applied; for outdoor vents, also caulk over each nail or screw to secure the vent cover into place.
- 5). Glide a craft stick or plastic spoon over the caulk if you wish to smooth it. Otherwise, allow it to cure for a full 24-hour period.
