Suddenly, out is the new in.

Well, taste is key, but the part of all of our brains that controls style has been picking up on some cutting edge edginess from sightly sources starting with Lady Gaga, Kesha and Nicki Minaj, but sweeping the fashion world. People who have a noticeably personal sense of style are bold, daring and have the courage of their convictions. We admire them for their ability to be true to themselves, although if we're really honest, we may envy their stand-out status just a little bit. But why envy them when you can easily you-ify your style, all while staying in your comfort range and in your budget.

While the first assignment you give your secretary on Tuesday morning may not be to hold your meat purse for you, the major case for having a unique style is that your fashion sense speaks volumes to the world about you. That isn't to say that looks say it all, but your editorial policy in how you choose to adorn yourself sums up various important aspects of your personality, your interests, heritage, worth, self worth, and overall walk of life. It is the difference in the way people interact with and treat you. You probably don't want to go all-out outlandish with your wardrobe, but if you introduce unexpected things into your daily dress, you may start to notice a pattern in what makes your style unique to you. You may be a closet punk rocker working in a quiet cubicle, or a landlocked ocean enthusiast. You may see color in ways not even the greatest artists did, or be a gypsy at heart who's tired of supporting the man. When your style is unique, it makes you and everyone around you look at you in a new light, and it adds color to everyone's day-to-day existence.

Another reason that unique fashion statements are so popular is their price tag. Without demand for designer brands and "the latest trends", pretty much anyone can make innovative statements with unconventionally juxtaposed pieces, thrifted wares and even forgotten closet clutter. Go through your closet and try layering pieces, run to a one of a kind boutique (like a thrift store). Accessorize with unconventional items, including bags that were not always purses, use a piece of ribbon as a belt; make your own jewelry or wear that crazy 19th century bracelet of your grandmother's. The biggest trend in fashion right now is that of one-of-a-kind and chic people displaying their differences for the world to see, for quite possibly no other reason than our own mental health. There is a lesson in the boldness of people who are unchanged by trends in being comfortable in one's own skin, as well as a statement of at least some degree of self assurance.
