- 1). Strip the bedding from the mattress and haul the mattress outside. Cleaning the mattress outside on a sunny day will help to air out the house and air out the mattress at the same time.
- 2). Power up a small carpet steamer. Add enzyme-based cleaner and clean the mattress as you would your carpet. Your goal here is not that the water you dump from the mattress be clean, but that you change the water at least five times and clean every inch of the top of the mattress. You can rent carpet steamers at major grocery stores, hardware stores and chains such as Home Depot.
- 3). Dry the mattress in the sun. Putting it on cement blocks or other risers will help the air circulate. Cover the blocks or risers with old sheets or towels so you do not ruin your mattress.
- 4). Flip the mattress to the other side. Make sure it is completely dry before you do this.
- 5). Power up the carpet steamer again and repeat the cleaning.
- 6). Let the mattress dry in the sun. Not only does being outside help to air out your mattress, but the sun acts as a bleaching and cleaning agent.
- 7). Mix 1 quart of water with ½ cup of white vinegar. Drizzle it on the stain or spot where the cat urinated. The white vinegar is a odor neutralizer.
- 8). Flip the mattress and spray vinegar on the other side.
- 9). Spray with orange oil to prevent your cat from coming back. Cats do not typically like citrus.
