- 1). Mold a basic body shape out of rice cereal treats, which are rice cereal mixed with melted marshmallow. The body should be an oval shape.
- 2). Mold a short neck and a head shape out of the rice cereal treats. The face of a collie is narrow and pointed. Mold a thin, sharp, oval shape for the head. Press the neck and head pieces at the end of the oval body. Insert a toothpick through all three pieces to secure in place.
- 3). Mold legs out of a tan fondant. Insert a toothpick into each leg piece, leaving the toothpick exposed at the top and bottom of the leg. Insert the top edge of each toothpick into the bottom of the body piece of the collie. The exposed bottom of the toothpick on the legs is used to insert the finished collie securely into the cake.
- 4). Cover the entire form of the collie with tan fondant, pressing and molding it around the rice cereal treats base. Trim away, as needed, any excess fondant with a knifeed.
- 5). Cut or tear white fondant into small pieces. Wrap the fondant around selected areas of the collie's body, as a collie's coat is often a mix of colors. Wrap the white fondant around the collie's neck, paws and even the ends of its nose.
- 6). Cut or tear dark brown fondant into small pieces and mix it into the collie's fondant coat. For example, add pieces around the face, throughout its fur and mold small pieces into pointed ears and press them atop its head. Add a dot of buttercream frosting to the spots on the head you want to add the ears, as this can act as an adhesive when it dries.
- 7). Mold a long, bushy tail out of tan and white fondant, for example, using white fondant for the tail's tip. Adhere it to the back of the dog using buttercream frosting.
- 8). Adhere small dots of dark brown and black fondant to the face of the collie using buttercream frosting to create its eyes and nose.
- 9). Drag a fine-toothed comb over the body of the collie to make streaks in the fondant that resemble fur. Drag and poke the point of a pin all around the fondant collie to pull tiny pieces of fondant in different directions to increase the resemblance to fur.
