The Best Ways for Dogs to Signal They Need to Use the Bathroom

Whether this is your very first dog or you first time to try to potty train a dog, it's important for your dog to understand when to let you know he needs to go to the bathroom.
This way you can quickly let him out so he can take care of his business.
This article will go over the most common ways people train their dog to let them know they need to go out.
The first way (also the most difficult way) is by having your dog "bark" when he needs to go out.
This isn't necessarily the best approach because in order to train your dog to do this, you will need him to know the "speak" command.
Then you will need to get him to "speak" each time at the door before you go out.
Unfortunately, this approach has another drawback and that is your dog will bark whenever he is excited and whenever he needs to go out, so you will not know which one is which and this can hinder your potty training progress.
The second (also second best) way to have your dog alert you is to have him sit next to the door.
Unfortunately this also presents problems because if everyone is in a different room, how are you supposed to know when your dog is sitting next to the door? The best way to let your dog know when he needs to go out is to use a bell (or a cluster of bells) hanging off of your door that your dog knocks with his nose.
This is loud enough to alert you when your dog needs to go out, yet not common enough in your dog's everyday life that he will ring the bell when he is excited.
