- 1). Purchase catmint bedding plants at a garden center or nursery. Select compact, bushy plants with even, green color.
- 2). Prepare the soil for planting catmint. Choose a well-drained spot in full sunlight, then use a trowel to work the planting area to a depth of 8 to 10 inches.
- 3). Plant the catmint on a cloudy day, or plant the catmint in the cool of the evening. Dig a hole approximately the size of the plant's nursery container. Remove the plant carefully from the container and set it in the hole. Adjust the soil in the bottom of the hole if necessary, as the catmint must be planted at the same level it was planted in the nursery container. Avoid planting the catnip too deeply, which can cause the plant to rot. Allow 12 inches between each plant.
- 4). Water the catmint immediately, and keep the soil moist until you notice new growth. After that time, water the plant once every week during warm, dry weather. Allow the soil to dry slightly before the next watering. Water during the morning so excess water can evaporate before evening.
- 5). Trim the plant by 1/2 to 2/3 after flowering in July to encourage another flush of blooms in August. Cut spent foliage to the ground in spring.
