Ever since the invention of the first televisions in the 1900s, it has been an integral part of many people's daily routine. Because of its status as a common household item, many people might consider fixing their TV set on their own when a problem occurs. Before attempting any work on TVs, people should remember that there are dangers that can further damage the TV and may cause injuries as well. - Replacing the power cord of your TV set is not as simple as you might think. Some TV sets have a receiver chassis that has a direct electrical connection to one side of the power cord. The hot line and the neutral line must never be interchanged because it will create a shock hazard that will not only damage your TV but put your life at risk as well. When trying to replace a power cord, make sure to take notes on how you removed the damaged one by creating a diagram on a piece of paper and taking notes on the placement and the colors of the wires involved.
- The most obvious danger one faces when trying to repair or work on a TV is the possibility of electrocution. Even if you have unplugged your TV, electricity still remains in its circuits. When you try to open your TV set, make sure you that you are wearing rubber gloves to reduce the risk of electrocution. The human body is a natural conductor, and electricity will literally jump through your body if you mistakenly touch a part of the TV's electrical system. There are ways to drain the electricity on a TV set, but it is better to leave this step to professionals.
- Be careful not to bang the cathode ray tube---assuming it has one---inside your TV set. The CRT is made of glass and may cause a sudden implosion that will scatter glass in every direction. The CRT neck is also fragile because it is thinner and accidentally breaking it will render the TV set almost useless. Make sure to wear an eye protector when working around a CRT TV to avoid damaging your eyes in case the CRT breaks.
