- 1). Work on one closet at a time, making your way from the front of the closet to the back. Go through it one section of your closet at a time, or you will create a larger mess by taking all of the items out at once.
- 2). Go through items as you take them out of your closet, keeping ones that you use and throwing away or recycling those for which you no longer have any use. Try on pieces that you do not wear regularly to see if they still fit. Put similar clothing and accessories together in neat piles on a clean surface while you are organizing, or place them in a laundry basket or bin. Make sure the "keep" items are in different containers or piles than the "throw out" items.
- 3). Sweep or vacuum up debris, dirt, wrappers and other waste that has accumulated in your closet before putting your possessions back into the closet. This will help ensure that dirt does not accumulate on your clothes and accessories and could make more room in your closet.
- 4). Build or buy shelves, racks or closet organizers for items, especially nonclothing ones. Use the shelves and racks to develop a system of organization, such as an alphabetical system for books or movies. If you stack clothing on the shelves, create small piles so that you can access each piece of clothing easily. Use bins, boxes or containers for some items, such as small materials that do not fit well on a hanger or shelf.
- 5). Put your clothes and items back into your closet in an organized way, putting similar materials together. Try to put clothing that you wear at the front of the closet so that you have easy access to it. Establish a system so that you have somewhere to put new clothing, accessories, books and other items in your closet.
