- 1). Introduce yourself to and establish relationships with local wedding vendors. Mention that you're starting a wedding planner business and would appreciate any leads they may have. In exchange, offer them your business. Ask if they will work with you on pricing in order to match competitors. Visit wedding invitation printers, wedding photographers and/or videographers, florists, bridal shops, and even local craft stores where you may be buying wedding supplies.
- 2). Take bridal consultant or wedding planner courses. A quick search online shows many wedding planner classes and courses. Your local community college might also be a resource for classes beneficial to your new career. Once you identify two or three event planning courses you're interested in, investigate each one thoroughly before shelling out any money.
- 3). Subscribe to wedding magazines like "Modern Bride" and "Martha Stewart Weddings." Regularly reviewing these magazines will give you a continuing education about wedding trends, fashions, and new ideas for weddings and receptions.
- 4). Join the Association of Bridal Consultants. Professional associations are a good way to stay up to date on bridal trends and meet other wedding planners. Network at the meetings and hand out your cards. You can also put your name in the association's database so newly engaged brides-to-be can find you when looking for local wedding planners.
- 5). Align yourself with a local established wedding planner mentor. There's nothing more valuable than on-the-job wedding planning training to truly understand what the job is about. Find a local events planner whose personality meshes with yours and offer to assist with her upcoming weddings. Mention any online wedding planning classes you've taken (or are currently taking) so that the established events planner knows you're serious about starting a wedding planning business. Offer to sign a no-compete contract so the potential mentor knows you're not going to steal any new brides while you're getting your wedding planning training.
