- 1). Unplug the refrigerator.
- 2). Empty the water defrost disposal pan, if there is one.
- 3). Remove all the food from the refrigerator, as well as all of the moveable refrigerator parts, such as shelves.
- 4). Fill a 5-gallon bucket with hot water and 3 tbsp. liquid dish soap.
- 5). Dip a clean sponge into the soapy solution, wring it out and wipe down the entire interior of the refrigerator and all its movable parts. Re-dip and wring out the sponge repeatedly throughout the process to ensure that you are working with a clean solution.
- 6). Fill a clean bucket with hot water and liquid bleach. Add 1 teaspoon of bleach for each gallon of water.
- 7). Dip a clean sponge into the bleach solution, wring it out and wipe down the entire interior of the refrigerator and all its movable parts.
- 8). Leave the refrigerator door open for 15 minutes or longer to allow it to air dry.
- 9). Reassemble the refrigerator and plug it back into the outlet. Return the food to the refrigerator.

Spread 3 oz. of finely powdered activated charcoal in a shallow pan. Set the pan on a shelf in the refrigerator. It will absorb any remaining odor. - 11
Remove the pan from the refrigerator after eight hours. - 12
Place a container of open baking soda in the refrigerator to help absorb new odors. Discard the baking soda after four months and replace it with a new, open box.
