- Children should leave themselves enough time to get to the bus stop on time. They should avoid rushing to the bus and running toward it. When waiting for the bus to arrive children should avoid fighting and pushing each other. Instead, they should wait away from the curb so that the bus cannot touch them. If a parent is waiting with a child the other children should obey any instructions the adult gives.
- Children should board in an orderly fashion, one at a time. They should obey any of the driver's instructions on safety. Children should remain seated and not move around the bus. If the bus is fitted with laptop or shoulder seat-belts the children should use them. Children should not attempt to distract the driver from his job by asking questions or calling out to him.
- Children should make sure they do not have any loose drawstrings on their clothing or long straps on bags as these can get trapped in doors and lead to accidents. Another tip is to walk in front of the bus when crossing the street. Children should never walk behind the bus because they need to remain in the clear view of the bus driver at all times.
- Children should not be tempted to pick something they have dropped after they have disembarked. The bus driver will not be able to see the child if he bends down to pick something up. Teachers and parents need to teach children to be traffic aware and to look for cars before stepping off the bus. Children should also be on guard against the bad behavior of other kids, particularly if they are pushing and shoving. In incidents like these children should not get involved and keep well back from any horse play.
