How to Decorate Horse Statues

    • 1). Paint your horse statues with enamel paints if you are decorating unpainted sculptures. Airplane model paints work well for this task, and you can use a variety of paint brushes for thick and fine lines. Consider the breed of model horse you are painting and its history. Find that breed's association on the Internet by searching for the breed name and the words "horse association," such as "Arabian horse association" or "Gypsy Vanner horse association" to find photos of that breed and information on coat colors and history. Apply realistic paints in these colors or choose a theme from the breed's history to illustrate on your statue. Paint the body of the horse first, then add the mane, tail and other details.

    • 2). Light up prepainted horse statues or metal horse sculptures with string lights, such as the type generally used for Christmas trees. These lights can be found in a variety of colors year-round at many department stores, home improvement stores and party supply shops. Wrap the lights around the horse statue, draping the strings over its neck and spiraling up and down the legs and over the torso. Choose yellow and green lights for a springtime look; green and blue for summer; red, orange and purple for fall; and blue and white for winter. Small statues can use short, battery-operated strings, often found at craft stores.

    • 3). Decorate indoor and outdoor horse statues with wreaths and flowers. Traditionally, the winner of certain horse races receives a blanket or garland of flowers that drapes around the horse's neck or across its withers. The flowers are specific to the race, with the Kentucky Derby known as the "Run for the Roses," while the Preakness--another race in the Triple Crown--is known for its black-eyed susans. If you cannot find a wreath with the flowers you would like to use, purchase a synthetic vine and flowers from a craft shop and twist the wire stems of the synthetic flowers into the wreath, then drape it around your horse statue's neck.
