How to Track Your Federal Income Tax Refund

    • 1). Log on to the IRS website using the link in Resources. On the right side of the IRS' homepage is a link titled "Where's My Refund" in the Filing and Payments section. Click on this link.

    • 2). Click on the link within the text to the "Where's My Refund?" online tool.

    • 3). Check the status of your refund by entering your Social Security number, filing status and the amount of your federal income tax refund in the provided boxes and click on the "Submit" button.

    • 4). Review your refund status. The IRS warns that federal income tax refund information may not be available to taxpayers until at least 72 hours after it has received electronically filed tax returns and two weeks after receiving paper returns.
