Home Remedies for Cat Pee in Carpets

    Vinegar Solution

    • Mix an equal amount of club soda with vinegar in a spray bottle or cup, recommends the book "Natural Alternatives for You and Your Home." Blot the cat urine with paper towels or an absorbent cloth by pressing down on the carpeting. Pour or spray the vinegar solution over the spot and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Using fresh paper towels or cloths, absorb the vinegar solution. Repeat this process of pouring and absorbing until the cloth shows no more urine and you do not smell any odor. Allow the spot to dry, then treat it again if necessary.

    Hydrogen Peroxide

    • Absorb the urine with paper towels or a cloth, douse the area with water and blot again with fresh cloths. Pour 3-percent hydrogen peroxide over the area and allow it to dry overnight. Check the area to see if it needs another treatment of peroxide. For stubborn odors, add a few drops of vanilla fragrance oil or mouthwash to the peroxide before pouring it on the stain, according to Cozy Cat Furniture. To avoid bleaching the area for darker carpets, mix the peroxide with an equal amount of club soda before application, to dilute it.

    Baking Soda Paste

    • Baking soda absorbs odors and helps to scrub away stains on the surface of the carpet when used in conjunction with other ingredients. Mix 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide with 1 tsp. dish soap in a cup. After blotting away the urine with paper towels, sprinkle baking soda over the stain, then pour the peroxide mixture over the baking soda to form a paste, recommends the Cats of Australia & the World website. Use a scrub brush to work the mixture into the carpet fibers and allow it to dry overnight. Vacuum away the baking soda, loosening it with the scrub brush if needed.

    Citrus

    • Cats do not like citrus scents, according to The Humane Society of the United States. To prevent the cat from coming back to the area on the carpet it peed on, to mark it again, add some citrus scents to your homemade cleaners. Add five to 10 drops of lemon or orange essential oils to your vinegar or peroxide cleaner to clean and freshen the spot. Use a syringe filled with a few milliliters of the essential oils, without the needle, to inject the scent deep within the carpet fibers and padding, according to "Natural Alternatives for You and Your Home."
