- 1). Purchase a phone plan for your cell phone. It's likely that you already have a cell phone plan, but if not, you'll need to buy one in order to activate your phone and register your SIM card. T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon are all popular cell phone services. If you have a SIM card from a specific service provider (i.e., AT&T SIM card), you'll have to purchase your service plan from them. Skip this step if you already have a phone plan.
- 2). Call your service provider. Some providers will allow you to make a call from your unactivated cell phone by using their special code, but if your provider doesn't have a direct-line code, you won't be able to use your cell phone since the SIM card isn't activated yet.
- 3). Give the customer service representative the phone number of the cell phone you want to activate. You'll also have to answer a few questions about your service plan to confirm your identity.
- 4). Tell the customer service representative the activation code that is written on your SIM card.
- 5). Put the SIM card into your cell phone and the service rep will register your phone number, plan and SIM card for you. In some cases, your phone may not be activated for a few hours, but it usually happens immediately.
