How to Make a Highchair Cover

    • 1). Remove the existing cover and measure it, being sure to include extra length for the hem. Add another 1/4 inch to allow for shrinking when the batting is added, unless you're using a prequilted backing.

If your chair does not have a current cover, measure its back and across the seat to just below the knees. Also measure both sides if you wish the cover to go up the sides. Measure for an extra length for the top slide-on pocket that will keep your cover in place. Double check all measurements to ensure that the desired length is going to fit your high chair.

    • 2). Purchase a sturdy washable fabric to match your decor or your baby's favorite character. Vinyl is a good selection for easy wipe and move on fabric, but it can be more difficult to sew for beginners. Selecting a fabric with a print helps hide any food stains and allows you more uses in between washings.

    • 3). Place your batting or prequilted backing fabric beneath the decorative fabric to save a cutting step and maintain consistency in the cutting process. Include two layers of fabric if you are using batting. Measure and mark with a pencil your basic outline using the existing cover as a pattern if it is available. Make your outline slightly larger to err on the side of caution. More fabric is always better than less. Follow the design of the chair and use your creative nature to change the design if you are comfortable with your measurements.

Pin with straight pins and cut both fabric and backing. Cut a long crescent shape approximately 4 inches tall and the width of the high chair to create the top pocket. This will stabilize your cover onto the chair and help it keep its place rather than slide around. Use the top of the high chair cover as a guide for cutting your crescent, as you will piece those two parts together.

    • 4). Pin the top of the crescent shape to the top of the cover fabric already cut, being sure to add all layers of batting or prequilted backing. Place the fabric with right sides facing together. Sew and remove pins. Turn right side out.

    • 5). Pin piping or lace, if desired, around the edges of the cover and pin sides together for sewing. This will provide a finished look to your high chair cover. Sew around all edges and remove pins.

Fit the cover onto the high chair and cut slits in the center of the cover for a seat belt. Hand stitch the edges of the seat belt slits to help stabilize the material for washing. Add seams along the folds of the cover so it fits onto your seat without bulging out.

Some covers have elastic to keep them in place. Be sure to check your chair and add where needed to the back side of the cover
