- 1). Sketch a conceptual drawing for the interior and exterior for the bookstore. Your design can be innovative, cutting-edge and unique. For instance, the Libraria da Vila bookstore in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has bookshelves covering the interior walls, with a big communal space in the middle of the store, with bean bags across the floor. Overhead, an opening in the ceiling gives a glimpse into the second floor of books.
- 2). Consider incorporating a café or small restaurant within your bookstore. If you decide to do so, you should work with someone with experience managing and running a food services business. Some health codes and licensing regulations may apply.
- 3). Create a 3D model of your bookstore design, with a program such as Google SketchUp. You should try to maximize window space, place multiple computer stations in the store and place a cash register near the entrance.
- 4). Lease a space that fits with your design. Hopefully, you can find a place with high foot traffic, such as downtown areas. Consult local building legislation to make sure that there are no regulations against remodeling the building.
- 5). Contract a construction company to remodel the building to be appropriate to your bookstore. You will need bathrooms, a common area for bookshelves, and storage space for surplus books. Discuss your design with the contractor and make sure that the general contractor has experience working with similar designs.
