- A teaching degree is often a positive credit on a resume for a prospective Hebrew school teacher. While the degree isn't required at most synagogues, it shows a level of expertise in instructing students. Degrees in other fields of education, like special education, can also be helpful.
- Experience working at other synagogues is a good recommendation for anyone applying to teach at a Jewish temple. Experience working at other religious centers will let hiring authorities know that you understand how the inner workings of a synagogue run. Include references, with phone numbers, to past religious school employers.
- Teaching at a synagogue includes explaining Jewish customs and holidays, as well as teaching various Jewish prayers. A person hired to teach Hebrew school students will have an understanding of Judaism and the ability to read and speak Hebrew. This will either be a person who is Jewish or one who has studied Judaism extensively.
- Some synagogues may require a form of certification to teach at their religious schools. Religious school certification is done through your local city government, and may include taking certain classes to qualify for certification. Check with the synagogue for their requirements, and consult your city government to learn about certification programs.
