Does Minoxidil Work for Hair Loss?

Minoxidil is a medication used throughout the world today for treatment of baldness. Along with Finasteride, it is the first line of treatment suggested to people suffering from hair loss throughout the world and is considered an effective treatment for the same.

Initially marketed as a blood pressure control medication, minoxidil users suffered (or gained) from an interesting side-effect. They saw hair regrowth. Finding it to be a good opportunity, Minoxidil 2% solution was created as a treatment for baldness and it was the first and only product to be FDA approved for baldness. Marketed as Rogaine in America, it is available for both men and women in different forms and is the highest selling hair growth product. But, is it effective? Does Minoxidil work?

Customer reviews on hundreds of websites, including Amazon, suggest that it works. There have been many studies which have proven its effectiveness. Most importantly, the fact that it is the only FDA approved product for hair loss speaks volumes about it.

In the initial few days, Minoxidil causes some amount of hair loss as the hair in the resting phase are shed off by the head. Once this process is over, new hair replace those that have fallen and some regrowth is seen in areas where hair had stopped growing. Though the website or the company does not guarantee that the hair lost will be gained back, nearly everyone gains them back.

The regrown hair is generally thin and soft and remain so for some weeks or months after which they gain some strength. It is to be noted that any hair gained through the application of minoxidil is lost within a month or so after the medication is discontinued. Hence, it is important that the user keeps applying it indefinitely.

Not everyone benefits from the use of this medication, however. Few people do not see any regrowth but see a reduction in hair loss. Others do not experience either reduction in hair loss or regrowth. Customer reviews on Amazon have also suggested that though it is sold as hair regrowth for the whole head, it does not positively affect the temple areas. It is especially effective for frontal and crown area hair and regrowth there has been reported in nearly all the reviews. So, does minoxidil work? Yes, but not for everyone.

There are some side effects from the constant use of Minoxidil. These range from dry hair, itchy skin to severe allergies and if you get any of these side effects, you should consult your physician and discontinue the use of minoxidil.
