- 1). Determine your hair's primary color. Hair is made up of three pigments: blue, yellow or red. Those with black hair often have blue undertones, while brunettes often have red tones and blonds have yellow tones.
- 2). Decide whether your hair color is "cool" or "warm." Those who have cool undertones typically have deep brown, blue black (like jet black), ashy or platinum blonde hair, while warm undertones usually indicate brown hair with reddish or golden highlights and strawberry or golden blonde hair.
- 3). Neutralize the undertones of your hair by selecting the color opposite of the undertone on the color wheel. For example, if you have light blonde or platinum undertones in your hair, select a hair dye with violet undertones to neutralize the color to help it appear richer. For those with blue black hair, select a golden hair dye to help the hair appear warmer. If you have brunette hair with red undertones, an ashy hair dye will deepen the color.
- 4). Mix the hair color with a developer and apply to the hair, leaving on for the allotted amount of time. Rinse the hair according to instructions.
