Although using tanning beds can put you at risk for skin cancer, there are certain things you can do to help protect your skin. Make sure you listen to your body and pay attention to how your skin is reacting to the amount of time you spend in the tanning bed. - Indoor tanning lotions should be used while inside the tanning bed because they are designed to provide your skin with moisture before and after you are done tanning. The majority of tanning lotions contain many vitamins and ingredients that will help expand the duration of your tan. When you have healthy skin, the tan will remain for longer periods of time. Only purchase indoor tanning lotions from a qualified indoor tanning specialist to ensure you are getting products that are not outdated, discontinued, damaged or tampered.
- When tanning indoors, you should always wear tanning eye wear to protect your eyes. You should not use towels, scarves or eyelids to protect your eyes while tanning, because they do not adequately protect your eyes from ultraviolet exposure. If you don't protect your eyes properly, you may face eye injuries such as photokeratitis, which is a cornea sunburn, cataracts, abnormal tissue growth called pterygium and damage to the cornea.
- When you begin using a tanning bed, it is best to keep your sessions to 5 to 7 minutes. The duration can be increased by a minute every couple of days you use the tanning bed. If you start to burn, scale back to the duration in which you tanned without burning.
