- 1). Wash and condition hair with light, clarifying shampoo and conditioner. Avoid any thick or heavy conditioners. Comb thoroughly to make sure hair is free of tangles.
- 2). Part hair on the top right and top left of the head to create a 1/2-inch wide strip of hair that runs down the center of the head from the forehead to the base of the scalp. Secure hair at the sides with clips.
- 3). Take a small amount of hair at the front of the 1/2-inch strip and divide it into three sections. Spritz lightly with water. Holding the center section, overlap the right and left sections to begin a braid. As you braid, begin to incorporate small pieces of hair from the right, then the left of the 1/2-inch strip into the braid, keeping hair close to the scalp.
- 4). Continue braiding this 1/2-inch strip until it is braided from the forehead, down to the nape of the neck and continuing down the length of the hair. Pull hair as tightly as possible without causing discomfort to ensure the braid is close to the head. Secure the braid with an elastic.
- 5). Divide hair into another 1/2-inch section either to the right or left of the center braid. Braid as before. Continue braiding 1/2-inch sections on alternating sides until the entire head is covered in braids.
- 6). Add a small amount of pomade or smoothing lotion as your braid to prevent stray ends from poking out.
