- 1). Paint the 2-liter bottle with spray paint. Each state has a specific color they require for jug lines. Most often, it's white.
- 2). Stick a 3-inch piece of reflective tape on the bottom after the paint dries. This reflects light from a flashlight and helps you locate the bottle in the dark.
- 3). Fill the bottle with one cup of sand, gravel or dirt.
- 4). Squirt caulk around the inside of the lid and replace it tightly on the bottle. Let it cure. This keeps water from entering the bottle and makes it waterproof.
- 5). Cut 25 feet of twine and tie one end around the neck of the bottle, under the lid. Wrap the twine around the neck a few times before tying a knot to secure it.
- 6). Start at the bottom of the line and tie one hook at three feet and another at six feet. Tie half a brick to the bottom of the line to serve as an anchor.
- 1). Bait the hooks and place the jug in the water, allowing the brick to settle on the bottom.
- 2). Shake the bottle to evenly distribute the sand so that it holds the bottle flat on its side in the water. When a fish is on the line, the sand will move to the lid and cause the bottle to stand upright.
- 3). Wait for a fish to bite. When the bottle stands upright, there is a fish on the line. Remove the fish by slowly pulling the line into the boat. Catfish can be up to 75 pounds, so you may need a partner to help you get the fish into the boat.
