This differentiation is done according to the filtering elements used. Sand filters, turned on carbon filters for acquiring odor, and taste, together with chlorine removal, anthracite filters in addition to superior garnet filters fall under the category of granular filtration. This category of treatment has been in practice for several years. On the other hand, the membrane water filtration utilizes membranes, as it is evident from the name. These serve the purpose of removing the suspended particles. Reverse osmosis is the classical example of this category.
