- Consider gifts that he can actually use. Displaying significant memorabilia items has its place, but the active sportsman may want something with more day-to-day application. Equipment such as footballs, basketballs and sneakers work well. Base your decision on what he is into. For example, if he enjoys hunting, try a night vision hunting scope if it's in your budget. The point is to not have the gift be random. If he's a baseball fan, don't purchase a Frisbee just because it seems like a good idea.
- If he follows a particular team, items with that franchise's logo on it makes a great gift. Thankfully, there are no shortage of options at your disposal, as logos are stamped on everything from coffee mugs to T-shirts. Even cellphone covers allow him to display his allegiances. Or, try purchasing a jersey of his favorite player on his favorite team. If you have the money, up the ante and personalize the jersey with his name on it.
- This is an easy choice, but always a popular one. One potential curveball you may face is that he may already have season tickets to his favorite team. If that's the case, look into buying tickets to a road game if the team is playing in the town where, say, he may have a business conference. Or purchase tickets to nicer seats than the ones he has. If he regularly sits in the nosebleed section at football games, buy him seats near the 50-yard line.
- Sports memorabilia is always popular, even if it doesn't necessarily involve his favorite team. For example, you'd be hard pressed to find a diehard baseball fan who wouldn't appreciate a football autographed by Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana. Trading cards of significance are nice as well, even without an autograph, as is the case with legendary players' rookie cards.
