- 1). Cut a 36-inch piece of heavy duty thread with scissors and thread it through the needle.
- 2). Pull the thread halfway through the needle so that 18 inches hangs on either side of the needle hole and knot the ends together.
- 3). Place the button over the fabric where you want to sew it.
- 4). Poke the needle through the back of the fabric and into one of the holes in the button. If you are sewing the button onto an upholstered piece of furniture or a sewn pillow, poke the needle directly under where the button is located and back up through a hole in the button.
- 5). Poke the needle back down through the hole next to the first hole. If the button only has one hole at the back, poke the needle back down into the fabric. Leave about 1/8 inch of slack in the loop.
- 6). Sew the same loop through the first two holes, or the single hole at the back, four times total, leaving the same amount of slack each time.
- 7). Sew up through one of the unused holes, if your button has four holes, and sew four loops around it and the other unused hole next to it.
- 8). Poke the needle up through the back of the fabric, and pull it out under the button. Wrap it around the slacked thread at the back of the button three times. Do this for all types of buttons.
- 9). Poke the needle back into the fabric and knot it at the back. Cut off the excess thread.
