A survey was conducted in 19th century which revealed that the 73% of the first time gout attacks were on the big toe - either on the left foot or the right foot or in some cases and even on both feet at the same time. The next most frequent attack was found to be in the ankle. However, even though the ankle gout was the second most frequent attack, it accounted for about 9 percent of the first time attacks only.
Physicians were aware of the toe gout long before the 19th century when it actually came into prominence. Almost 150 years has passed and the statistics still reveal the same percentages of the first gout attack being in a large toe. These days it's reckoned to be about 60- 65% and the ancient Greeks used to call it-podagra.
Gout attack on toe is quite painful at times, this attack occurs at the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe. Usually when the gout attacks the toe, many peoples' reaction is that they have broken their toe.
Understanding the signs and symptoms of the toe gout can prevent the re-occurrence or flare-ups in the big time. Some of the warning signs of an impending attack is prickling sensations or twinges in the large toe. Another warning sign is if your level of uric acid in your body is beyond normal.
Twinges:
Dealing with twinges is simple. A person who is familiar with gout, who knows their gout really well, can guess something could happen in time to take a remedial natural remedy or take preventative drug medications by swallowing NSAIDs or low dose colchicine. Sir Alfred Garrod thought that twinges (or prickly sensations), meant that some crystals had already been deposited. So, you have to act fast. There is no clear explanation why the big toe is one of the most common places of attacks from gout. However, it is good to know that it is certainly one of the most targeted areas for first-time gout attack.
Note: There is no medication or remedy to cure big toe gout specifically but keeping your body warm and doing regular exercise. The trick here seems to be to visit a reflexologist as soon as you feel the twinges or prickling sensations or whatever signals you learn are indicative of an impending attack.
