St John"s Wort For Anxiety - Should You Try It?

Most people associate this medication with the treatment of depression but did you know that St.
John's Wort for anxiety is a very effective treatment? There are many reasons that this is the case.
Not the least of which is the fact that SJW works as an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor).
In pharmaceutical terms, SSRIs are often prescribed for the treatment of depression and anxiety.
The reason is simple.
Many of the symptoms of both are impacted by the level of serotonin in the brain.
Increasing the amount of serotonin diminishes the feelings of anxiety, restlessness, loss of appetite, stress, and depression that often accompany lower amounts of serotonin.
St.
John's Wort has been repeatedly compared to certain SSRIs such as Zoloft and Prozac and displayed very similar results without many of the negative side affects that are associated with these prescription medications or the high price tags that go along with them.
The current research, which is constantly ongoing, indicates that SJW is just as effective as Zoloft or Prozac when it comes to treating mild to moderate depression and/or anxiety.
Some homeopathic healers will recommend using both Melatonin and St.
John's Wort for anxiety.
The combination of the two are believed to be a powerful force for mental healing and clarity.
Melatonin is also well known as a sleep agent.
Since sleeplessness is one of the main problems associated with anxiety, this alone can make a huge difference in the healing process.
It is best to consult with a physician or homeopathic healer before taking St.
John's Wort for anxiety or depression.
While it can be an amazing tool for ending depression in some people, it is not a one size fits all solution or cure for depression.
There are other treatments for anxiety that may be more effective depending on the scope and severity of your anxiety.
If your anxiety is the result of inadequate supply of serotonin though, St.
John's Wort for anxiety is an excellent place to begin.
It should be known that there are some risks associated with the use of St.
John's Wort.
Like other SSRIs on the market there is a slight increase in the risk of deepening depression, worsening anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
This risk is higher in those who are under the age of 25.
If you notice any major changes in behavior, violent mood swings, thoughts of suicide, or thoughts of harming others while taking St.
John's Wort you should notify your physician immediately.
You should also not take St.
John's Wort for anxiety or any other reason without notifying your physician and pharmacist of any medications, supplements, vitamins, and over the counter or street drugs you may be taking.
Failure to do so can have serious consequences to your health and may result in death due to drug interactions.
St.
John's Wort for anxiety is a highly effective treatment method when used correctly.
