What Are Kissing Balls?

    Tradition of the Kissing Ball

    • During the 19th century, festive decorations were frequently implemented, and a tradition which stems from that time is the Christmas pomander. To create this early version of the kissing ball, people would poke sprigs of holly, evergreen and kiss-inducing mistletoe into the surfaces of potatoes or apples. They soon became a symbol of long life due to the longevity of the plants used in the creation of the pomanders. Thus, it was stated that if a woman received a kiss under such an ornament, an everlasting marriage would soon follow.

    Kissing Balls at Weddings

    • Because kissing balls are so conveniently carried, brides often choose them as bouquets for their flower girls and junior bridesmaids. However, because of their stunningly full look, brides and bridesmaids are also trying out this trend, particularly at informal weddings. Pomanders provide brides with a cost-effective alternative to traditional wedding bouquets, and their portability ensures that you will be able to use them again in the wedding reception.

    Incorporating Kissing Balls

    • Kissing balls make elegant decorations for the sides of church pews and perfect adornments for wedding arches. After the wedding, you can easily transport them to your reception site and use them as centerpieces on the tables. They can also be suspended from the ceiling of your venue for a spectacular hanging garden effect.

    Construction of the Kissing Ball

    • Modern kissing balls are created by poking the stems of natural or silk flowers into the surface of a floral foam ball. Oftentimes, ribbons or streamers are also added to give the pomander a fuller look. This is done either by tying lengths of ribbon to several floral stems or by pinning a large ribbon to the bottom. Lastly, kissing balls are held up by a loop of ribbon pinned into the top, which either acts as a handle or a way to suspend the pomander from a hook.
