- 1). Check your computer connections to make sure you have a serial port. This is the port you need to install external dial-up modems.
- 2). Shut down the computer. Connect the external modem via your serial port. Plug the modem's power cord into an outlet and switch on the modem. Connect the phone cord to the back of the modem.
- 3). Restart your system. The new hardware wizard will pop up. Insert the disk that came with the modem, continue through the hardware wizard and click "Have disk" when prompted. Type in the drive letter that contains the modem drivers (CD-ROM or floppy disk drive). You may have to type in the exact address of the modem's "INF" file (such as D:/driver.INF). Check your external modem's manual for the exact "INF" file name in this case.
- 4). Press "Continue" to install the software drivers that came with the modem and let the hardware wizard complete the installation. Restart your computer if prompted to finish the the installation. Use you dial-up service to connect to the Internet---the modem must be connected and powered up each time you attempt to connect.
