- 1). Treat any stains on the tie before you wash it. If you have a greasy spot, put talc powder on the stain to pull the oil out of the tie. Otherwise, you can use the stain removal process you use for the rest of your laundry -- just spot treat the stain.
- 2). Fill your sink with lukewarm water. Add mild detergent to the water.
- 3). Insert the tie into the water to clean it. Do not twist, wring, rub or scrub the tie in the water. Gently agitate it in the water to clean it by brushing your hand along it.
- 4). Rinse the tie in cold water until the water runs clear.
- 5). Hang the tie to dry. Do not wring out the water. Straighten out the tie so that the points dry properly.
- 6). Lay the tie flat and place a damp cloth on top of the tie. Heat iron to medium heat and lightly press the tie. Iron both sides. Let the damp tie dry completely before putting it away.
