- 1). Brainstorm the focus for the essay. Write down the main idea of the essay and indicate words or phrases that come to mind that are associated with the topic. For example, if the topic of an essay is on your community, words or phrases that could be used include families, playgrounds, home architecture, schools, churches and projects. You should use at least three of the items listed to begin to form a shell for the essay.
- 2). Form an outline around the topic. Take at least three of the subtopics from the essay brainstorm and begin to write a brief summary about each subtopic. The summaries will serve as the foundation of the paragraphs for the essay. For example, one of the subtopics during the brainstorm was schools. A brief description would include how many school there are, when they opened, where they are located, how many students they have, what grades are taught and the make-up of the student body.
- 3). Write a rough draft of the essay. Take the summaries and form the structure of the essay. The essay should have an introductory paragraph, three supporting paragraphs and a paragraph that concludes the essay. Add additional supporting details to each paragraph and proofread the rough draft for spelling and grammar errors.
- 4). Make an corrections necessary to your essay, and print out a final copy.
